Grimsby residents face a new round of overnight construction downtown this week, as crews move to the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection before a roughly four-week closure of Mountain Street begins, according to the Town of Grimsby's weekly Downtown Reimagined dispatch.

The overnight intersection work is tentatively scheduled from Wednesday, October 7 until Saturday, October 10, running from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The intersection will reopen each morning at about 6 a.m., the town said.

Once that work wraps up, Mountain Street between Elm Street and Main Street will be fully closed for approximately four weeks so crews can finish the job during daytime hours.

Soil dug up during the night work will be temporarily stockpiled at the pool parking lot, the town said, because receiving sites are not open overnight. The material will be removed shortly after it is placed. A soil stockpile previously kept at that lot has already been cleared.

Watermain work continues on Main Street West

Watermain installation on Main Street West, from Forty Mile Creek to just beyond Patton Street, began Wednesday and is expected to continue throughout the week. The town says the servicing crew will join the work early to mid-week.

Crews also finished directional drilling for watermain installation on Rossmore Avenue, the town reported.

On the paving front, the news is better. Overnight paving along Main Street East, through the Elm Street intersection and into the Balsam Lane parking lot wrapped up Wednesday, September 30, followed by daytime paving on most of Elm Street on Thursday, October 1. Elm Street is now fully open.

A small section of the mainline trench near Oak Street still needs to be restored. The town says that will be done when Mountain Street is paved after the watermain installation is finished.

The town is urging drivers to check its traffic, construction and detour plans online. It also stresses that downtown Grimsby remains open for business throughout the construction.

Municipal election underway

The construction update comes as Grimsby's municipal election moves into full swing. Online voting opened Monday, October 5 at noon for all voters who received a Voter Information Letter.

Advance polls are set for Wednesday, October 14 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Major Refrigeration Peach King Centre.

Election day is Monday, October 26, with voting from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at designated poll locations based on the ward where a voter's property is located. Voters who did not receive their information letter were asked to contact the town by Thursday, October 1.

Fall events downtown

The town also highlighted fall events downtown. The final Grimsby Farmers' Market of the season takes place Thursday, October 8 at the Major Refrigeration Peach King Centre behind Town Hall.

The Moonlight Market & Movie is coming to Coronation Park on Saturday, October 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The town's Construction Passport promotion has now ended, and the municipality thanked residents who took part and supported downtown businesses. Residents with questions can email DTreimagined@grimsby.ca or follow the project at letstalkgrimsby.ca/dr-construction.
