Drivers travelling through downtown Grimsby this week will face overnight closures at the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection as the Town's Downtown Reimagined construction work continues.

According to a Town of Grimsby notice, the intersection will be closed to through traffic from 8 p.m. to roughly 6 a.m. beginning Tuesday, October 13, with detours in place for both cars and heavy trucks. Elm Street and Mountain Street will remain open to local traffic as dead-end roadways while the closure is in effect.

Delays on Main Street West watermain work

Watermain installation continues along Main Street West between Forty Mile Creek and just past Patton Street, but the Town says crews have hit a snag. Existing Bell infrastructure encased in concrete has delayed completion of that stage.

Once the Main Street West work is finished, crews will move to Mountain Street between Elm Street and Main Street. The Town says difficult ground conditions and trouble connecting to the existing sanitary sewer have slowed progress at the Elm and Mountain intersection, so overnight shifts will continue through the remainder of the week to keep the project moving and avoid the disruption of switching between day and night work.

During daytime construction, one lane of alternating two-way traffic will be maintained on Main Street West between Forty Mile Creek and Patton Street, with no detour required. The left-turn lane at Main Street West and Christie Street remains closed. An additional closure is planned for Mountain Street between Elm Street and Main Street, with details to come. Downtown parking lots stay open throughout the work.

The Town is encouraging residents and motorists to review the construction and detour plans before travelling through the area, and says downtown Grimsby remains open and accessible, urging continued support for local businesses.

Advance polls open this week

The notice also reminds voters that advance polls for the 2026 municipal election run Wednesday, October 14, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Major Refrigeration Peach King Centre.
